SCROOMS is an exploration and creature-catching game built around sound. You equip an instrument, draw a Scroom into range, tune toward its frequency, and keep the marker inside the catch zone until the progress meter fills. That short loop connects to almost everything else: quests unlock tools, tools open new regions, the Index tracks discoveries, and spare catches become Chimes for later instruments.
Use this hub to choose the next practical job. The three guides below cover the opening route, the catch interface, and the currency loop. For exact species or equipment lookups, move to the Scroomdex or Instruments section after you understand the basics.
Pick a guide
Beginner Guide
Follow the opening route from Leo’s Wooden Lute through Halden, the Ocarina, Songtreads, and the first Bluestone crossing.
How to Catch Scrooms
Read the approach, tuning, catch-zone, and result stages, with fixes for the most common failed attempts.
How to Get Chimes
Turn duplicate catches into steady currency while protecting quest targets and making sensible upgrade purchases.
The progression loop in one view
Begin at Leo’s camp and finish the tutorial conversation. Equip the Wooden Lute, catch the first target, and learn where the Equipment Bag, Quest Log, Index, and Inventory sit. Continue through the early Grove route rather than wandering toward later barriers with no movement tool.
Halden’s early chain teaches exploration and eventually awards the Ocarina after the five weathered statues. Later, his progression sends you to Shax. Winning Shax’s first race and completing the reward dialogue grants Songtreads, whose running speed lets you clear the gap into Bluestone Caverns. The official Magic Melody and Songwalker badges confirm those two milestones.
Between quests, catch duplicates and sell only the copies that are not required by an active objective. Spend Chimes when a new instrument solves a real problem: a target frequency outside your current reach, tuning that feels too slow, or catch handling that has become inconsistent. A higher price is not automatically a universal upgrade.
What each menu is for
Equipment Bag is where you inspect and equip instruments or movement gear. Use the live item card for current stat values because public launch lists disagree on some numbers and prices.
Quest Log is the reliable source for your next objective and turn-in state. A completed requirement may still need a final NPC conversation before the following quest appears.
Index is the Scroomdex in practical terms. It tracks area pages, discovered names, rarity, frequency ranges, and additional tone progress. An undiscovered silhouette can still tell you which area or tier to investigate.
Inventory holds catches you can keep, use for a quest, or sell. Check the Quest Log before clearing it. Index credit and possession are different: discovering a creature does not mean an NPC can accept one you already sold.
A productive first session
Finish the tutorial catch before shopping. Open the Index and inspect the starting Grove page so you know what progress looks like. Accept nearby NPC quests, then group objectives by route instead of crossing the same ground for one item at a time.
When you find an unfamiliar Scroom, attempt the catch while your inventory has room. If tuning stalls outside the target band, note the displayed frequency and compare it with the current instrument card. Do not spend several minutes repeating a reach problem that requires different equipment.
Return to town or the current merchant after several catches, not after every single one. Keep any named quest target and sell ordinary duplicates. Set aside enough Chimes for the next tool you actually need rather than buying every small step in the shop.
How to choose the next objective
If a locked route is the problem, prioritize the quest chain that awards a tool. If a species is visible but difficult to catch, inspect instrument reach and handling. If you can catch reliably but cannot afford a purchase, run a short duplicate-catching loop. If Index completion is stalled, open individual cards and look for missing tones instead of assuming another base species is hidden.
The Quest Guide organizes the major launch progression. The instrument list separates catching instruments from utility items. The Scrooms list is the quickest area-and-rarity lookup when you have a silhouette or name in mind.
Common early mistakes
Selling the quest catch. Keep the exact creature named by the objective until the NPC accepts it. You can always sell another duplicate later.
Treating frequency as spawn chance. A card’s Hz band is a tuning target, not a percentage. Rarity describes the collection tier; neither field publishes exact encounter odds.
Leaving a reward dialogue early. A race win, level condition, or completed collection can update the quest without placing the reward in your bag. Speak to the NPC again and finish every prompt.
Assuming Songtreads immediately double-jump. The first boots provide the speed used for the Bluestone running jump. Current progression reports place the airborne extra jump on a later Echo Step upgrade.
Following an old number instead of the live card. Prices, levels, and equipment stats can change. Use current guides for the route, then let the in-game Quest Log and item card settle a numeric disagreement.
When information changes
SCROOMS can add events, areas, instruments, and Index entries without changing the opening principles. The official experience page and badge list are the strongest public evidence for game identity, core catch instructions, and named milestones. Detailed routes and item values rely on current community readings and should be checked against your server after an update.
This guide set was checked on October 24, 2026. The Updates page separates dated official observations from community reports so you can see whether a changed requirement may explain a blocked route.
